Facial Reconstruction

Skin cancer surgery and trauma are common causes of defects in the face, head, and neck, and patients would benefit to select a reconstructive surgeon with experience in facial reconstruction. Depending on the location of the defects, these can be challenging to hide, and sometimes require several procedures to maximize the aesthetic appearance of the wound. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Vila is highly skilled and experienced with reconstructing challenging defects of the face, head, and neck, and will discuss with you various options for getting the best aesthetic result possible.

Am I a Good Candidate for Facial Reconstruction?

No two reconstruction cases are the same, so Dr. Vila will meet with you and talk through your options with you, taking into account the treatment area, and your specific set of goals. Together, you’ll be able to come up with a treatment plan that properly addresses your concerns.

In most cases, you’re a great candidate for facial reconstruction with Dr. Vila if you’ve had cancer removal surgery or Mohs surgery, or if you’ve suffered some sort of facial trauma, for which reconstructive surgery is the best possible option.

What Happens During the Facial Reconstruction Procedure?

Dr. Vila can usually perform this procedure in the office under local anesthesia, but sometimes larger defects must be done in the operating room to get patients as comfortable as possible. Usually both options are possible, and Dr. Vila can recommend which option might be the best. Either way, Dr. Vila will draw on his extensive surgical training and experience to keep you comfortable during the procedure, while getting you the best aesthetic result possible.

What Will the Recovery Process Be Like?

Some bruising and swelling will be present during the first week, which is completely normal. It will have subsided within about three weeks, and you’ll be left with some redness over the incisions as the body creates new blood vessels to heal the area.

Stitches in the skin are removed after a week, with some redness persisting for up to three months, before fading into a thin white line. Dr. Vila will sometimes inject steroids or a dermabrasion procedure three months after the initial reconstruction, for minimal scarring.
