Injectable Fillers

Injectable fillers have become extremely popular, and are an excellent way to provide some added volume to rejuvenate the face as we age, or simply to give an extra plump to the lips, for example. There are both permanent and temporary fillers available on the market, though Dr. Vila primarily uses the temporary, or hyaluronic acid-based fillers, in his practice. He mostly uses a cannula technique to minimize the risk of vascular occlusion and prevent bruising, though he sometimes uses a needle technique when needed.

Am I a Good Candidate for Injectable Fillers?

During your consultation, Dr. Vila will meet with you, review the issues that brought you through our door in the first place, and go over your cosmetic goals in detail. This will help him figure out whether or not fillers are the right choice for you, and which specific filler will bring you the ideal results, if so.

You’re likely a great candidate for dermal fillers if you’re in Portland or the surrounding areas and you’re dealing with:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Lost volume
  • Skin laxity
  • Crinkly skin

How Do Fillers Work?

Fillers are an excellent option for patients who may not be ready for a surgical procedure, and want a lesser downtime after treatment. They’re commonly made up of a compound known as hyaluronic acid, which is made naturally by your body, but in smaller and smaller quantities as we age. This compound encourages your skin to retain moisture, while also encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, which help your skin to look healthy and youthful.

Why Shouldn’t I Get Permanent Fillers?

There are quite a few options, when it comes to fillers, but board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Vila recommends that the overwhelming majority of patients pursue hyaluronic acid-based fillers that are temporary. This is for several important reasons.

First, permanent fillers cannot be removed, which means that if there is a vascular occlusion on injection, there is no reversing agent. Occlusion from filler injection is a rare event, but it does happen, and can be reversed if hyaluronic acid-based fillers are used.

Second, like most trends in fashion and aesthetics, the “in” look can and does change over time. Why not use a product that can adapt with the times? These dermal fillers won’t permanently change the way you look, giving you control over your appearance.

Which Filler Is the Right One for Me?

If you’re interested in trying out facial fillers to see what kind of aesthetic changes can be made, Dr. Vila will examine you closely and recommend a product based on the area of the face to be treated, as well as your specific needs. If your goals are more in line with a surgical treatment, Dr. Vila will tell you this up front, rather than trying to use more syringes, with increasing cost and diminishing return.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect?

Fillers are an excellent option with minimal downtime for the right patient. Under eye circles, nasolabial folds, sagging cheeks, and lips are areas that can be treated with the right filler for you. During your consultation, Dr. Vila will take time to explain the expected benefits, with appropriate expectations.
