What Are Neuromodulators?

Here at Vila Facial Plastic Surgery, we offer a few different neuromodulators, including Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau. Though they each have small differences, they are all used for the same cosmetic reason – to temporarily reduce the appearance of forehead lines, glabellar lines (also called “11 lines”), and crow’s feet (the smile lines around the eyes).

How Do Neurotoxins Work?

Injectable neuromodulators are the most common cosmetic procedure in the United States, due to the ease of the procedure, the lack of downtime, and their impressively quick onset (five to seven days after injection). These products work by blocking the nerve signals to muscles in the face, whose repeated use and contraction causes the development of fine lines and wrinkles, enabling you to enjoy a fresh-faced and youthful look.

Each of our injectable neurotoxins are based on Botulinum toxin, with tiny variations in each product. By injecting the neurotoxin into the muscles of the face that cause wrinkles, we weaken the muscle to relax the skin, leading to smoothing out the wrinkles over time. In younger patients, neurotoxins will erase wrinkles completely, and in older patients, it will soften them.

Can Neuromodulators Be Combined with Other Treatments?

For patients seeking more dramatic results, neurotoxins can be used to relax the muscles, followed by treatment with a CO2 laser, intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment, or chemical peel to resurface the skin. Dr. Vila can discuss your goals with you after examining you closely to personalize your treatment.

How Often Do I Need Treatment?

There are small differences between all of the injectable neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau), but each of them last approximately three to four months before a follow-up treatment is advised. If you’re consistent with your treatments, you might be able to space them out, so that treatment is needed less often.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

Injectable wrinkle relaxers like Botox are priced by the unit. Some practices use large amounts of product to drive up the cost; however, Dr. Vila believes that the minimum amount of product should be used to achieve the best result, and will start with the lowest amount necessary.

In general, for most people seeking to smooth wrinkles on the upper face, Dr. Vila most commonly treats three areas – the forehead, the glabella (area between the eyebrows above the nose), and the crow’s feet (the outside smile lines next to the eyes). For patients seeking this treatment, this usually takes approximately 50 units.
