What Is Preservation Rhinoplasty?

Preservation rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to modify the shape of the nose while preserving as much of the original bone and cartilage as possible. The procedure is often performed to straighten crooked noses, remove nasal bridge bumps, and slim down larger noses.

  • Before and After

How Does Preservation Rhinoplasty Work?

Preservation rhinoplasty is similar to structural or traditional rhinoplasty but requires different surgical techniques. When performing the surgery, Dr. Vila carefully removes small pieces of bone and cartilage from underneath the nose while preserving the visible structures close to the skin, which can avoid long-term contour issues sometimes seen with structural rhinoplasty. This precise rhinoplasty technique ensures the desired changes are made while preserving the beautiful pre-existing anatomy without unnecessary modification.

Benefits of Preservation Rhinoplasty

For adults who are unsatisfied with the appearance of their nose, preservation rhinoplasty can provide all of the following benefits:

  • Smoother nasal bridge
  • Slimmer overall nose shape
  • Straightened nasal bridge
  • Appropriate nasal projection
  • Natural-looking results
  • Preserves the majority of cartilage
  • Improved self-esteem

What Should I Expect During the Procedure?

If you believe a preservation rhinoplasty could be right for you, your first step should be to schedule a consultation with Dr. Vila. He will examine your nose and talk with you about what you’re hoping to achieve. If you and the doctor decide that a preservation rhinoplasty is the right course of action, he’ll work with you to devise a personalized treatment plan.

When the time comes for the surgery, you will be administered general anesthesia. Dr. Vila will make tiny incisions inside the nose and between the nostrils. Next, he will use extreme precision to adjust or remove cartilage and/or bones, reshaping your nose based on desired changes. Once he has finished reshaping the nose, he will close the incisions and apply bandages. On average, the surgery takes between three and four hours to complete.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

You’ll need someone to drive you home, but you will do so an hour or so after waking up from your surgery. For the first week of recovery, you’ll need to rest. You should take occasional light walks to keep your blood flowing, but it will be best to take a full week off from work and your normal routine. You’ll also need to refrain from strenuous physical activity for approximately two weeks.

Because Dr. Vila is extremely careful to preserve as much tissue as possible during your surgery, the recovery period is typically easier to get through. However, you’ll still be likely to experience some swelling and soreness as your nose heals.

How Long Will It Take To See Results After Preservation Rhinoplasty?

Although the changes to your nose may be visible right away, it will take time to see the full results of the surgery. As the swelling subsides over the following weeks, your nose’s new form will gradually reveal itself. It generally takes 1-2 years for 100% of the swelling to resolve after a rhinoplasty.

Am I a Candidate for Preservation Rhinoplasty?

If you’re interested in reshaping your nose and have not had surgery before or suffered major trauma to your nose, you could be a candidate for preservation rhinoplasty. To be an ideal candidate for the surgery, you should meet these requirements:

    • Be in generally good health
    • Have not undergone a previous rhinoplasty
    • Want to make changes to your nose’s shape and/or size
    • Be a non-smoker
