What is a rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgery designed to change the appearance of the nose, which an expert surgeon can do while preserving, or even improving, breathing function. This is considered one of the most difficult cosmetic surgeries, due to its highly technical nature, and you should trust your nose to a rhinoplasty specialist with a high level of training and experience, like Dr. Vila.

What are the Different Types of Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Vila offers different types of rhinoplasty to suit the needs and goals of his patients. These types of rhinoplasty include the following:

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

Cosmetic rhinoplasty addresses aesthetic concerns about the nose, including the size, symmetry and shape of the nasal features. During cosmetic rhinoplasty, Dr. Vila uses a skillful, precise technique to help achieve an attractive nose that is more harmonious and balanced with your other facial features.

While the primary purpose of cosmetic rhinoplasty is to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose, this type of rhinoplasty can also improve functional concerns caused by a deviated septum.

Functional Rhinoplasty

As its name suggests, functional rhinoplasty addresses functional concerns in the structures of the nose. Blockages or other physical concerns impair easy breathing and result in concerns such as excessive snoring.

During a functional rhinoplasty, the function of the nose is restored, making breathing easier, resolving snoring, and returning the nasal and breathing functions to excellent working order.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty resolves errors made by a previous surgeon during the original rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is a delicate procedure. When it doesn’t achieve the desired results, either too much work was done or not enough. The results leave patients disappointed with their new nasal shape and size.

Revision rhinoplasty requires the highest level of surgical skill and technical experience. This procedure should only be done by a highly trained facial plastic surgeon.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is performed for a nose job that requires more complex or significant alterations. During open rhinoplasty surgery, small incisions are made in the natural folds of your skin outside of the nose. These incisions are made carefully and precisely so that the resultant scarring is nearly impossible to see once healed. Once the incisions are made, Dr. Vila will gently lift the nasal skin to expose the underlying nasal structures. He will sculpt and improve the nasal shape and size to achieve your desired result.

Endonasal or Closed Rhinoplasty

Endonasal or closed rhinoplasty is a less invasive nose surgery technique that uses smaller incisions made within the nostrils. Closed rhinoplasty leaves no visible scars and causes significantly less nasal trauma. However, closed rhinoplasty is only used for nose jobs that require more finite, minor changes. For more significant restructuring of the nasal shape and size, open rhinoplasty should be performed.

What Happens During the Nose Surgery Procedure?

Dr. Vila performs both open and closed (scarless) rhinoplasty techniques. In what’s known as the closed approach, the incisions are placed just inside the nostril. For the open approach, the incision is placed in the skin between the nostrils, known as the columella.

The soft tissue and skin of the nose will be carefully separated from the underlying cartilages and bone, which will then be addressed and placed into the proper position. This creates a look that’s more in line with your cosmetic goals, while taking care to preserve a harmonious and natural appearance, while also maintaining or improving your breathing ability.

The procedure, in most cases, can take anywhere from two to four hours. The exact time will depend on the specifics and complexity of your procedure, and Dr. Vila will walk you through exactly what to expect during your consultation. At the end of the procedure, sutures are used to close the incisions, and tapes and a cast are applied to maintain the new shape of the nose.

What Will the Recovery Be Like?

You’ll be able to go home the same day as your surgery, with an external cast that’ll stay on for a week. You’ll deal with some mild discomfort, which will only last a few days, and will be easily controlled with pain medication. The sutures, cast, and splints will come off a week after surgery, and most patients are able to get back to school and their daily lives after just a few days.

Some swelling and bruising might be visible near your nose or eyelids, but this will resolve within seven to ten days. Swelling around your nose will mostly resolve after 10 days, but a small amount can persist for up to three months, with the definition of your nasal tip improving over time. Generally speaking, you’ll be able to return to normal activities after 10 days.

What is the goal of Rhinoplasty?

The goal of rhinoplasty is to direct the gaze toward the smile and the eyes, which are typically a person’s best features. The nose should act as a bridge between the lower and upper face and not draw undue attention to itself. Whether the patient struggles with an enlarged dorsal hump, a bulbous or drooping tip, or flared nostrils, rhinoplasty can help restore balance and symmetry, boosting your self-image.

Auxiliary procedures such as chin augmentation are often performed in tandem with nose surgery to optimize the profile and enhance overall results. With any cosmetic rhinoplasty, patients typically enjoy improved breathing. Functional rhinoplasty to address a deviated septum or collapsed nasal valves can be combined with nose surgery for aesthetic purposes.

Put Your Face in the Most Capable of Hands

It takes a high level of experience to make cosmetic changes without impairing the patient’s breathing ability, and Dr. Vila prides himself on his extensive training and impressive procedural experience. Unlike most other cosmetic surgeries, the changes from a rhinoplasty can continue to evolve over many years unless specific precautions are taken, meaning Dr. Vila’s proficiency in functional nasal surgery and specialized training in facial plastic surgery have made him an expert in this complex procedure.
